The one thing that never changed

The One Thing About February That Never Changed

3 min read

Almost everything about how we buy jewelry has changed in the last century and a half. The stores, the prices, the way stones are cut, what's considered precious and what isn't — all of it has shifted, sometimes more than once.

One small thing hasn't. If you were born in February, the stone assigned to your month is the same one it was for your grandmother, and her grandmother before her. It has outlasted every trend, every revision, every attempt to modernize the list. Nobody has touched it in over a hundred years.

The Year Someone Decided

For most of the 19th century, there was no single answer to the question "what's my birthstone?" It depended entirely on where you lived. Different regions, different jewelers, different traditions — one town linked a month to one stone, the next town to another. It was a patchwork, and for a growing jewelry trade, patchworks are bad for business.

So in 1912, at a national jewelers' convention in Kansas City, the American jewelry trade did something about it. They adopted a single official list — one stone per month, agreed upon, printed, and sold the same way from one coast to the other. For the first time, your birthstone was your birthstone no matter which shop you walked into.

February got amethyst. One stone, no alternate. Clean and settled.

Except They Didn't Really Choose It

Here's the part most people get wrong, and it's more interesting than the myth. The 1912 jewelers didn't sit down and decide amethyst suited February. They inherited that pairing — it was already old by the time they made it official.

Forty-two years earlier, in 1870, Tiffany & Co. had published a small pamphlet of birthstone verses. The one for February already named the stone. And Tiffany didn't invent it either. European lists going back centuries had already placed amethyst first for February.

What happened in 1912 wasn't a choice — it was a confirmation. America took a pairing that had been drifting through tradition for generations and made it permanent.

The February-born shall find / Sincerity and peace of mind, / Freedom from passion and from care, / If they an amethyst will wear.

Tiffany & Co. birthstone pamphlet, 1870

The Rare Part

That official list didn't stay frozen. It was revised in 1952, again in 2002, again in 2016. Months gained new stones. Some had their gems swapped for others that sold better or cut cleaner. The list we use today is not the list from 1912.

February is one of the few months nobody ever touched. Through every revision, every committee, every update meant to modernize the tradition, amethyst stayed exactly where it was.

There's something quietly reassuring about that. In a category built on novelty — new cuts, new collections, new reasons to buy — February kept the same stone for over 150 years, simply because no one ever found a reason good enough to replace it.

If February Is Yours

We made Stillness with that in mind. Genuine amethyst, photographed from the actual batch we ship — the same stone that has belonged to February longer than anyone alive can remember. If you were born in February, or someone you love was, this isn't a trend you're buying into. It's the oldest, steadiest choice on the entire calendar.

Not because a committee decided it in 1912. Because generation after generation kept it, and never once wanted to let it go.

What Lasts

Most things in a jewelry shop are designed to feel new. This is the opposite: a stone that has meant the same thing, for the same month, for as long as the tradition has existed. Some things endure precisely because people stopped trying to improve them.

February had its answer a long time ago. It still does.
