The Rule Nobody Remembers

In 19th-century Britain, mourning wasn't just a feeling — it was a wardrobe, governed by rules as precise as a dress code. Full mourning came first: black, matte, without shine, often for a full year. Crepe instead of silk, because even the fabric wasn't supposed to catch the light. Jewelry, if worn at all, stayed dark and unadorned. The rules existed so no one had to decide, in the middle of losing someone, what they were allowed to wear the next morning.

Then came the transition. Half-mourning, they called it — the phase between the deepest black and an ordinary life. And in that narrow window, before color was fully allowed back in, one shade was permitted before all the others: a deep, quiet violet.

Not bright. Not celebratory. Just dark enough to still carry weight, and warm enough to mean you were coming back.

The Brooch That Kept Showing Up

In the British Royal Collection, there's a set of amethyst jewelry that has survived nearly two centuries — a necklace, hair combs, three brooches. It passed quietly through the family for decades, the kind of jewelry worn and re-worn without much ceremony, until 1901, when Queen Victoria did something deliberate with it.
